Crickets are a new protein source in several countries for people and Thailand is looking for new markets to export them.

"The insects here, and in many other countries, are in high demand. They can create jobs for farmers facing the COVID-19 crisis now, "said Miss Ju-adee Pongmaneerat of the National Standard of Agriculture and Food.

"We are targeting the EU and Mexico as our new markets for this kind of food," she said yesterday (28 Aug. 2020) in an interview with Thai-language daily Thai Rath.

The Livestock Department is responsible for certifying all cricket farms' standards, which can now harvest more than 7,000 tons of crickets worth about 1,000 million baht per year.
