All passenger flights were barred from landing in the country to prevent the spread of coronavirus epidemic, the aviation authority said on Friday.
Anyone arriving on a flight that had taken off before the order came into effect will need to be quarantined 14 days after arrival in Thailand, the order said.
The ban entered into force on Saturday morning and will run until the end of Monday, Thailand's Civil Aviation Authority said in an order published late Friday.
It came just hours after a commotion at Suvarnabhumi airport, when on Friday more than 100 Thai nationals arrived on numerous planes, an officer from the Immigration Bureau told Reuters.
"A public health officer allowed them to quarantine at home. There was a commotion when they claimed they didn't realize they needed to place themselves in a state quarantine," the officer claimed.
The restriction on incoming air travel came a day after the government requested people abroad to delay returning home in a attempt to avoid the imported cases until after April 15.
A increasing number of citizens have been diagnosed abroad since March 1, until they return home. The authorities also quarantined almost 2,000 citizens who come in contact with them.
Thailand has six international airports, including under a curfew from Friday in the capital Bangkok and the iconic tourist island Phuket, which was expected to close down its airport from Friday to April 30.
