Dj Scotty - Psychadelic Veteran

Just before he left to go and spend some time in Europe, Dj Scotty the psychadelic veteran visited us at Phanganist HQ to talk about his dj career and playing at Blackmoon and the rest of the Trance party scene...

Tell us your own Koh Phangan story…
I think the first time was in 1999 as during my first ever trip to Thailand I met Pom whose Dj name is Sabai Sabai. He is the father of trance for Thailand. I actually booked him to play in Germany for ‘Vuv Festival’, also known as Voov or Vuuv, then we both came to Koh Phangan.

He was in Phuket and then we started to do something here.

The Full moon Party was already going, I played Tommy’s which was the first place I played music here.

We started also with Jungle Experience as at the beginning it was psychadelic, then Ban Sabai and that’s how I came to be here. I met Leung and Dj Note and booked these guys for other places as well.

So what do you think of the growth of Koh Phangan over the years?
For me it’s always magic Phangan but everywhere you go you will have different generations and different people coming.

In the last three to four years it has changed more to Techno and House music etc so there are not so many places to play psychedelic music, Tommy’s was the last place.

Everywhere you go will have a change but I still love it, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to still come.

Sorry this is a horrible question for a Dj but explain your style of Djing for our readers...
I go for the dancefloor, I have to create a crowd of people to dance and then I go with the people.

I don’t have a ready made tracklist, I watch the people and see where they want to go.

Playing for two hours now is quite short, I used to do five, I go with the people and create a story.

So what do you like about playing Blackmoon and Shiva Moon here?
At Blackmoon I play the beginning, it's a beautiful spot. I like that it’s going on on the beach, in Goa the parties always start on the beach and this reminds me of this, a really authentic place.

Shiva started about ten years ago, it used to be located up more high but I really like Koi and Ssong, they’re a very nice family and I have known them for twelve years. I have booked Koi for Vuv Festival, he is one of my old dj friends, I have known him from the beginning.

What are your main projects for the rest of the year?
To come back soon to magic Phangan!
 

So you’re leaving us for a bit…?
I have to go back to Germany to make some money but I will come back asap.

Life is too short to miss magic Phangan, now I have my girlfriend here but this is another story so I have TWO loves here.

If I got a job here which I could live on then yes I would be here all the time but I don’t see it at the moment.

When I’m in Germany I’m still djing, well actually I can be everywhere not just Germany.

Next weekend I play in Sweden then Austria, in between maybe I will go to Taiwan, so I’m still around.

In Brazil there is a festival called ‘Tribal Tek’ and there I will do a ‘Vuv floor’. This will be good as  I got tired of Europe’s festivals as I did it for too long, there’s too many politics.

Anything else you want to mention to Phanganist’s?
I’m on my way to retire hahaha!

I like to make people happy, it’s a present for them. I used to do parties but now I do this with djing.

It’s the energy to make people happy, it’s the best you can get in your life! So far they haven’t kicked me out of the dj booth!

I make myself happy to make people happy.

So what do u enjoy about Phangan when you are not djing?
I like it all, I like to be alone in the jungle for ten minutes and I really like to go for sunset at Freeway Bar, that’s my favourite spot.

Now I have been to 360 Degree Bar which I also love. I go snorkelling in the ocean and I have my love here so there’s a lot of loves for me here on the island.

And if I don’t play in the night time then I like to play pool in BM Bar.

Leave us with your music philosophy?
For me it’s all about having fun, this why I still like all kinds of electronic music which is of quality.

So music is my life.
