On Monday the 9th of May Koh Phangan’s schools reopened their doors.
After a nice few weeks of long summer for the children they now return to their education or for some, start a new experience by joining the school.
We spoke with Mel who’s son Tien had his very first day at school after finishing his time with The Learning Tree.
Tien started at The Temple School in Thong Sala and is one of a few mixed heritage children along with a small number of westerners.
Already he can speak both languages and all of his friends from his old class at the Learning Tree have gone there too so Mel reports that he’s happy!
Was Tien excited to go to school?
Tien was pretty excited about school, I was more nervous than he was because they didn't tell me anything.
I even found out what day to start from someone else and just hoped it was right!
It was definitely different from his old school who were very informative. Even today they gave me a list of the class schedule all in thai with a load of thai books and I've had to get it all translated and made myself a list so I can send him in with the right books.
He has thai, english, and maths everyday plus sports and health, music, science and social studies.
What are his favourite subjects?
He loves maths but he's not too keen on writing.
He’s excellent at sports so will hopefully be on some sports teams and represent the school. They also have the boy scouts on a Thursday.
And how is it bringing up your child here on Phangan paradise?
I really love bringing up my son here, he loves swimming and is dying to be old enough to try scuba diving.
I have no idea how he will like school in a week (when the homework starts to come in) but he said his first day was 'ok’...and ran off to the beach!
Phanganist wishes Tien and all of the other children a great start back at school!
