Reuters reports that on Friday, Thailand said it would grant visitors a window of grace until September to apply for visa extensions as it relaxed restrictions in this phase of the pandemic, a senior official said.

"The situation has changed in the country and abroad," Immigration Bureau Commissioner Sompong Chingduong told Reuters.

"So we are not proposing to extend visas after 31 July, but to require visa applications from 1 August to 26 September," he said, adding the grace period would be submitted to the cabinet for approval.

Despite that, if an application was not made and the visa expired, it would be deemed illegal to remain on.

Thailand has issued automatic visa extensions to foreigners twice so far to prevent lengthy immigration queues.

The nation went through seven weeks without verifying local transmission. It recorded 3,239 infections and 58 fatalities.
