The white sandy beaches of the stunning Maya Bay of Krabi may be open to tourists next year, but the suitability of the plan will first be consulted by a panel of experts.

The beach on the island of Phi Phi Leh, made famous by the 2000 Hollywood blockbuster "The Beach", has been closed for rejuvenation since mid-2018.

The beach is pristine again, the greenery is flourishing after the more than two-year closure, and long-lost crabs and other marine creatures have returned to hunt in the bay again.

Warawut Silpa-Archa, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, said on Tuesday that the island will be open to tourists to rebuild the tourism industry that has been crippled by the Covid-19 outbreak.

However, a committee of experts will first be consulted before that is done on the feasibility of allowing no more than 350 people to enter the island each day and the plan to ensure that no boats are anchored near the shore. If the panel agrees, so next year the island will be open to tourism.

Meanwhile, Warawut encourages people to visit the 155 national parks of Thailand, especially Phang Nga Bay, which is located on the popular Koh Tapu or James Bond Island.
