As proposed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Cabinet has approved the establishment of the National Committee on Geoparks.

The committee, chaired by the Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, is comprised of representatives from the Ministries of Education, Culture, Interior and Sports and Tourism. Its task is to designate and propose to UNESCO a geopark location in Thailand.

The UNESCO Executive Board approved the designation of 15 new UNESCO Global Geoparks in Asia, Europe, and Latin America in July this year, bringing the number of participants in 44 countries in the Global Geoparks Network to 161.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are single, unified geographical areas where, through a systematic approach to protection, education, and sustainable development, sites and landscapes of foreign geological significance are managed.
