Thailand has created an ultraviolet (UV) sterilization robot named the "Germ Saber Robot," which can be used to help fight the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The Germ Saber Robot was jointly developed by the National Security and Dual-Use Research Center under the National Science and Technology Development Agency and the Chulalong Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.

The robot uses powerful UV light to destroy germs in the air and on surfaces of objects and is navigated by remote control. It works well in disinfecting rooms and machinery which can not be washed or exposed to liquid cleaning agents with chemical disinfectants.

It takes 15-30 minutes to sterilize and people and animals must leave the scene, as UV radiation causes damage to organic cells. This form of disinfection does not leave chemical traces, as opposed to organic disinfectants.

Due to the lack of cleaning supplies during the COVID-19 outbreak, the Germ Saber Robot is considered a solution for the cleaning and disinfection of different areas. The robot can move in any direction as it is remotely operated, thereby allowing it to work at sites under all conditions.

A robot trial activity was scheduled at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital in Bangkok before the robot became operational at other agencies.
