This Tuesday, due to a donation-funded campaign, thousands of homeless people can roll up their sleeves and get compensated for sweeping Bangkok 's highways.

The "Employ Me" initiative of the Mirror Foundation announced it would employ disabled marginalized persons to clean public places and help them raise income from the organization. The goal of the project is to arrange one cleaning function each week. Participants are charged 400 baht in return for four or five working hours.

"All of these participants are older than 50, which is above the era factories or other workspaces would carry in," said Benjamas Pangam, the project leader. "The 400 baht may not help much, but it's going to help them purchase any food, pay their bus fare, or have a wash."

The program currently includes 38 homeless people and their first project is to clean up the skywalk around the Victory Monument starting Tuesday at 2 pm. The Mirror Foundation is an NGO which helps poor city dwellers.

Benjamas claimed that many of the homeless were forced onto the streets by family problems and economic deprivation.

Not everybody will qualify for the scheme. Participants don't involve numerous street individuals with mental disorders; rather, they are expected to seek care.

Anyone involved in recruiting the company for other activities should call the Mirror Foundation at 091-046-8598, or contribute to their Siam Commercial Bank account number 202-2-58289-4 to the initiative.
