Hidden high above Lamai Beach on Koh Samui’s lush hills sits Overlap Stone – a jaw-dropping natural boulder that looks like it’s been perfectly balanced by nature itself. Perched 150 meters above sea level, this giant granite rock offers insane views of Lamai Bay, the surrounding jungle, and the endless turquoise ocean. It’s the perfect mix of peaceful nature, a touch of adrenaline, and a seriously Instagram-worthy backdrop. Plus, it’s still relatively uncrowded compared to other island attractions, so you might just have this wonder all to yourself for a few magical moments.

Why Go?

If you’re tired of the usual beaches and want something a little offbeat, Overlap Stone delivers. The thrill starts before you even arrive – the ride up takes you through winding jungle roads, with steep climbs and bursts of ocean views between the trees. Once there, you’ll find a short but sweet walk leading to a wooden bridge that takes you right to the rock’s edge. Standing there, breeze in your face, with the island sprawling out below you… it’s the kind of view you’ll remember long after your trip ends.

Where Is It & How to Get There

Overlap Stone is tucked away in the hills above Lamai Beach. Getting there is an adventure in itself, and you’ve got options:

🛵 By Scooter

This is the most popular choice for adventurous travelers. Head to Lamai, find Wat Sila Ngu (Red Temple), and take the steep road opposite it. Follow the signs for “Overlap Stone” – yes, there are actually signs! The road gets steep in parts, so if you’re not confident, you can park halfway and walk. The ride down is just as exciting – go slow and enjoy the jungle breeze.

🚗 By Car or Taxi

You can drive most of the way up and park near the entrance. The road is narrow and steep, but fine if you take it slow. Taxis can take you there, but negotiate the fare first and maybe arrange for them to wait – you won’t easily find one passing by later.

🥾 On Foot

If you’re a fan of uphill hikes and sweating it out, you can walk from Lamai. It’s a steep, hot climb, so bring water and good shoes. Otherwise, save your energy for the short hike from the parking area.

Entry & Opening Times

  • Overlap Stone 1: 200 baht entry (includes a cold drink), 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM
  • Overlap Stone 2: 20 baht entry, more rustic and higher up, no set hours

Bring cash – no cards here. And keep your ticket for that free drink!

What to Expect

Once you’ve parked and paid, it’s a short, uphill walk to the viewing platform. At Overlap Stone 1, the highlight is the wooden bridge leading to the boulder – sturdy, with railings, but still enough to give you a little thrill. The views are panoramic, stretching from Lamai Beach to the jungle-draped hills. While you can’t climb the boulder anymore, the photo opportunities from the platform are more than enough. Expect to spend 30 minutes to an hour here, soaking in the scenery and snapping photos.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning (8–10am) is magical – cooler, quieter, and with soft lighting that makes the ocean shimmer. Late afternoon (around 5pm) is perfect for golden hour and sunset vibes, though it might be busier. Avoid the midday heat unless you love hiking in a tropical sauna. For the clearest views, visit during the dry season (January to April).
