According to Governor Wichayut Jinto, on Sunday, the operation to clear away the sunken Raja 4 ferry that sank off Koh Samui island on Aug 1 has been completed.

MS Service Co was hired by Raja Ferry Plc to bring up the ferry from the deep water. Two large crane vessels were used by the company to raise the wreckage to the surface. The ferry was put upright, and the inside water pumped out.

Officials were sent by the Marine and Coastal Resources Department to monitor the salvage operation.

The ferry held 16 people, a pick-up truck, and three 10-wheel lorries loaded with electronic waste and compressed garbage blocks.

Among the 16 people on the ferry board, twelve were rescued, and four drowned.

In an earlier operation from Sept 21 to 24, the three lorries, along with 70 blocks of packed garbage, were carried back to the surface.

The governor said a further 20 blocks of garbage that broke away were retrieved without damage to the area's marine or coastal resources.
