With Big Boss Sharon’s recent purchase of his very own bicycle and other members of the Phanganist team already riding push bikes here on the island it comes of no surprise that we have been spending a bit more time at Phangan Cycling Shop!
Owned and run by Mai who is originally from Koh Samui we took Leo down with us to discover another ‘KP Gem’.
Phangan Cycling Shop is located in Hin Kong opposite Freeway Bar, just look for their unique sign and turn down into the welcoming space to Mai’s shop.
Mai has been here permanently now for just over one year and prefers the more quiet island and different atmosphere here rather than Samui.
“Koh Samui has more cars and people, before I moved to this location I was just down the road at Castaway which is also nice and quiet”.
Mai himself started riding bikes about 10 years ago for exercise and also training;
“I like doing this exercise and I like sport, before I used to run marathons so it’s similar, I also like extreme sports”.
Mai shows us his cross country racing bike which he cycles all over the island including to Haad Yuan and Tien. It’s super light, 12 speed and very fast getting to speeds of up to 120 km per hour on a good day! Mai preferably likes to cycle off road.
Phangan Cycling Shop offers everything you could need for cycling, fixing and service, parts in store and he can also order parts in from Bangkok.
We asked Mai why he thinks Koh Phangan is good for cycling…
“It’s nice on Phangan, there are not as many cars as other places and not busy. There’s good jungle and you can see more local people and the community more when you cycle”.
Mai is certainly the most well equipped man for the job both in terms of knowledge and in the store, so if you need help purchasing or fixing a bike then he’s your man!
