Nurse Monica works at Bandon Hospital on Koh Phangan, she is one of the first people you will see and possibly meet there with her friendly face, soft smile and wise eyes, she is a relaxed and bubbly nurse who will make you feel at ease whatever you worry.
Monica was born here on Koh Phangan and learnt her skills as a nurse in Nakhon Si Thammarat on the mainland and has now worked for 42 years as a nurse.
“I have been working for a long time with lots of people, I started when I was young, now I am old ha-ha. I like it here, I like the big boss and have known them for a long time”.
In fact Monica has been with Bandon Hospital from the beginning, she started working at the first branch in Surat Thani, then moved to the Samui branch and then Koh Phangan.
Monica helps the doctors, she has worked with many different ones and she likes to take care of people which is why she became a nurse.
“I like to speak English with foreigners and enjoy to meet tourists at the hospital”.
Like the doctors we have spoken to, Monica agrees that the most common problems come from people having accidents here on the island. Their job as a nurse is that one will clean the wound and one will dress it, they also take care of any other easy work which the doctor doesn’t have to do.
Nurses will take a patient's blood pressure and details and take care of any overnight patients and also the local Thai patients who come in to Bandon.
And what does Monica do in her free time when she’s not working? Well she just loves to work but if not then she is with her family here on the island.
