Myanmar airports might not be available for international commercial flights until October, according to Henry Van Thio, vice-president of the National Tourism Development Central Committee.

Based on a report in the Irrawaddy, an online news channel, the travel industry will have to wait until October to begin recovery.

However, there is no assurance that even though the country opens its airspace to foreign aircraft, there would be some takers other than airlines providing repatriation fares.

Domestic flights operate but are limited to Myanmar nationals and foreign residents registered in the region. Since the end of March, international visitors have been stuck in the world waiting for repatriation flights at home. Thousands of Myanmar people are also waiting overseas for a chance to come home.

The Government of Myanmar has announced that when it reopens commercial flights, it will be limited to routes serving nearby cities in the ASEAN region and following countries throughout Asia.

Initially, officials expected that "plane gaps" or tunnels might be set up with Thailand and Vietnam to restore direct flights of passengers that will be excluded from 14-day quarantine laws. However, this is impossible to happen now.

The current situation reported by the Myanmar government is a total of 321 confirmed Covid-19 cases, and 250 have recoveries.
