Chapter 7

Today is the Last Day of Your Life

Li Yin said to me, “Today is the last
day of your life.”
Alarmed I asked him what he meant.
“Yet,” he said, “The last day yet.”
He smiled and asked me, “Do you
see the skeleton here?”
I said that I didn’t.
“It is with you all your life, can’t you see it?”

Again, I asked him what he meant.
“I mean the skeleton that is in your
body,” said Li Yin.

Birth is mounting and integration.
Death is dissolution and
disintegration. The infinite things are
Combined and disintegrated
In an endless and eternal dance.
There is something that doesn’t
Change in mounting and dissolution;
That doesn’t change in birth and in death.

That is the Tao.
The Tao is infinite.
The borders of the separate self
Are melting in it like snowflakes
That fall into the ocean.
We are all one family,
The ice, the water, the vapour.
We come from the same
ocean. We return to the same
ocean, The Tao.
Here is everywhere.
Now is all the time.
The one that people are honouring
mostly Is the one that doesn’t search for
honour. Because of this, the Master is
respected. All things are laid
On the palms of his hands And
he doesn’t hold them tightly
From above.
He drew out the cork from separate
self, So his bottle if filled by itself
With the endless
Wisdom of
Infinity
