Travel bubbles for general tourism are not going to become reality in the near future, so the first individuals to benefit are likely to be working experts and people attending foreign meetings, senior officials said Wednesday.
Gen Somsak Roongsita, National Security Council Secretary-General and Member of the Government Committee on Disease Control Relaxation, said the Center for Covid-19 Condition Administration (CCSA) had not yet agreed on travel bubbles.
As head of the CCSA, doctors, and security officers, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was worried about the potential consequences and stressed public safety over-tourism.
"For travel pairing, several countries have contacted us, but Thailand will emphasize public safety. Steps for regulating Covid-19 in those countries must be studied ... There will be detailed consultations that could extend until next month," Gen Somsak said.
An administration source said the policy should evaluate future revenue from the plan for travel bubbles, the potential effects of any undetected, contaminated tourists on local residents, and other probable harm.
