On Wednesday, the Centre for the Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) reported that for seven days, 46 provinces had no new Covid-19 cases.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, the spokesman for the CCSA, said that another 14 provinces had not detected a single new case since the start of the latest outbreak.

Tak and Maha Sarakham were two provinces that, on Wednesday, however, reported an increase in cases.

In response, the Covid-19 provincial situation control centre of Tak said that it had proposed restrictions for specific areas to contain the virus, Dr Taweesilp said.

He said that 21 new infections have arisen in Maha Sarakham, 17 of which live in the province, while three of the other patients were all from Ratchaburi and the other from Khon Kaen.

Provincial health officials said the all-clear had been received by 2,477 out of 4,149 people tested for Covid-19, while 21 were positive and the rest were still awaiting their results.

A doctor was said to be among the 21 people who tested positive in Maha Sarakham.

The maximum Covid-19 control zones were declared in Muang and Kantharawichai districts, with strict disease prevention measures enforced, and 17 venues were closed to control the spread of the disease, Dr Taweesilp said.

The epicentre of the recent virus outbreak, Samut Sakhon, reported 777 new cases on Wednesday, of which 667 were migrant workers.

The total of infections in the province now stands at 12,907.

"People should not become complacent and let down their guard, especially those in maximum control zones such as Samut Sakhon and Bangkok," Dr Taweesilp said.

He also said that proactively hunting for new infections, as officials in some provinces were doing, was labour and budget intensive, saying finding and testing one at-risk person cost 2,000 baht.

Dr Taweesilp said the CCSA would rather have people's cooperation than have to enforce laws to contain the virus.
