Due to strong winds and a high tide, an operation to lift the sunken Raja ferry off the seabed off Koh Samui has been delayed. The purpose of the salvage operation is to recover the ferry and a number of garbage trucks which it was carrying during the sinking.

Teerapong Chuaychoo, sub-district chief of Koh Samui, says workers at the salvage company MS Service need to flip it first in order to get the boat up. The garbage trucks will be loaded on to the pontoons, it is understood. A report in Nation Thailand says officials expect it to be completed in a week once the operation can get underway.

On the evening of August 1, the ferry sank when rough weather caused the 10-wheeler garbage trucks that it was carrying to shift. Five of the 16 people on board were killed and rubbish was thrown into the sea and washed on the beaches around.
