Koh Phangan is renowned for its laid-back, spiritual vibe that attracts visitors from all over the world. However, even in such a tranquil environment, it’s easy to get swept up in the hustle and bustle of life. One excellent way to slow down, reconnect, and add some activity to your day is by cycling. It’s a fantastic way to explore the island, stay fit, and enjoy some peace of mind.
Em Phanganist, one of our very own island enthusiasts, is an avid cyclist. She shares her love for riding her bike and explains why it has become one of her favorite activities on this beautiful tropical paradise.

“Back in the UK, I always had a bicycle and cycled everywhere. It’s more ingrained in the culture there,” Em explains. “Since bringing my bike to Koh Phangan, I’ve been thrilled to see the cycling community here grow—or maybe I just notice it more now because I’m part of it!”
Cycling has become more popular across Thailand in recent years, with many locals recognizing its benefits for both health and fitness. “One of the things I love most is how friendly the Thai community is. Cyclists often greet each other as they pass, which adds such a warm, personal touch to my rides,” Em shares.

On her bike, Em finds herself more connected to her surroundings. “I have time to take in the beauty of the island, wave at friends on their motorbikes, and even blow kisses as we cross paths. It’s such a joyful experience!”

Cycling also provides an excellent way to stay active. “By simply cycling to and from the Phanganist office, I get about 40 minutes of exercise each day—exercise I wouldn’t get if I were riding a moped. And you know what? I love it! Cycling is enjoyable, so it doesn’t feel like a chore at all,” Em says with a smile.
Beyond exercise, there’s also a playful side to cycling. “Sometimes, I’ll have a good laugh with friends trying to do wheelies or other fun tricks. It’s all part of the experience!”

Famous physicist Albert Einstein was a lifelong advocate of cycling. He once famously said, “Life is like riding a bicycle: to keep your balance, you must keep moving.” This timeless wisdom reminds us that cycling isn’t just a mode of transport—it’s a metaphor for life itself.
