Firstly, get your helmet ready and put it on your head, great, now we can begin.
If you are an experienced driver, on a scooter or car then we’re sure you enjoy the thrill of a really good road and drive.
Koh Phangan has come a long way in recent years, the road to Haad Rin is now cemented and other areas are getting renovated so they are safer and better to drive on.
If you fancy a nice drive with some epic scenery then here are some tips for some of the best roads to try out.
The Thong Nai Pan Road
This road goes all the way from Baan Tai to Thong Nai Pan. It is one of the longest journeys but so worth it just to get to Thong Nai Pan and then as a bonus you get extraordinary scenery along the way!
Go past Jungle Experience and Half Moon Party locations and it is up hill afterwards for a while but gets easier along the way.
The view is of the middle of the island to your left, untouched luscious jungle as far as the eye can see. The road is generally in good condition now after having a makeover in the last year and stays nice and quiet all year round.
Haad Rin Hills
Please only attempt this if you are a confident driver. The Haad Rin hills are very famous, it is the way to the Full Moon Party of course and if you are staying anywhere else on the island you will use this route to get there, if you are going for the actual party then take a taxi as it gets very busy.
If it is not party time then you can experience these steep hills and the wonderful views out onto the ocean that they give you. There are a few restaurants and bars along this road that you can stop at to enjoy a beautiful sunset also. Plus some monkeys if you’re lucky.
The ‘Wipeout’ Road - New Road
This road goes from the Shiva Moon Road in Baan Tai, continue up past the turning for Shiva Moon and take a left at the top. It will take you all the way to Thong Sala!
It is nicknamed the Wipeout Road by us as it reminds us of an old computer game called ‘Wipeout’, it is a fairly new road which is a pleasure to drive on and also boasts a viewpoint to stop at halfway along.
It is a great road to drive as well as being a nifty shortcut away from the main Baan Tai road.
2 Mile Straight
Also known as the Chaloklum Road, this is a great drive and has little hills and lots of space. You will pass a few temples which are nice to stop at before ending up in the lovely fishing village of Chaloklum. You may see an ostrich if you can find it…
Coastal Road
A beautiful drive suitable for all, this road goes from Thong Sala into Sri Thanu the Haad Yao etc all along the coast. It does get a bit hilly after Haad Yao but you can stop if you are not confident or take a taxi or tour.
You can look out over the mangroves of Hin Kong, stop off to admire the views and there are some amazing restaurants in this area to check out too.
This is also the best side of the island for sunset so be sure to stop and witness it on your way back!
