Phanganist caught up with our pal DJ Boyonic, the man with the coolest t-shirts, to see what he’s preparing musically for the coming high season...
A veteran of electronic dance with over ten years in Full Moon parties which can hold up to ten thousand people a month. He was resident DJ for Backyard, the original Full Moon After Party in Koh Phangan for many years.
"I first played at Backyard the Full Moon after party, then Black Moon, Half Moon, Sramanora, Full Moon and many more."
Originally from the mainland, Surat Thani, Boyonic first heard about Koh Phangan from friends and came straight away at the end of 1998. He has lived here ever since. “Music made me stay, the Phangan style and the feeling here, it’s lovely.
So what have you been up to since we last spoke?
I have been working on some new business which I have coming up, running my hostel business and Blackmoon Culture party.
What is being worked on at Blackmoon?
It is changing, it’s still the same Psy Trance but with a little bit more Techno and Tech House. It’s something new for Blackmoon, we still have Psytrance from 1am to 6am but earlier than this we’re doing a ‘Boyonic and friends’ easy style Techno start.
Why did you decide to start to include this?
It’s not my decision but the idea of DJ Leung the owner of Blackmoon to bring something new. We have brought it in early before the banging Trance, so it’s not just one style. Some people like it a bit funky in the beginning then we go up to very high energy Psy Trance.
What music are you personally focusing on?
Tech House and Progressive House, always with the Boyonic style and sound. I’m experimenting with new things and am making a project with Magic Phangan record label to make ‘Psy Tech’ which will come out very soon. It’s between Tech House and Psy Trance, the two mixed together.
What is good about the music scene here?
I hope the island doesn’t change to follow Ibiza too much, Koh Phangan has to have its own sound.
In the world we have a lot of young people and they have the chance to listen to many things and so Koh Phangan should have its unique style, people come to Phangan and want something different to the party scene in Europe and that’s what’s good about it here.
What is happening currently in Phangan’s music scene?
I think it is great for the underground sounds at the moment. We have many DJs living here or passing by and we have big names, local and international so it’s more than just one choice.
What are you working on for high season?
I’m sure I will be taking care of my guests in Smile hostel and I have been preparing for nearly half a year to get a good tracks, wicked tracks to play in my 2 -3 hours set for every party.
Have you got any other plans to play anywhere else?
Maybe if I’m lucky I will get to go to the desert parties in the UAE, I’m not sure yet but I’m getting signals from them.
Any last words?
For myself I have got to keep doing what I’m doing every day, I love music, not just for other people but for myself, it must turn you on and I will continue to be a DJ from the heart.
You can catch Boyonic play at every Blackmoon party where he is resident DJ.
