Travelling as a solo male traveller can be easy and can be hard.

On Koh Phangan there are many solo travellers who find themselves on the island and this can be an advantage, but with also a few disadvantages. If you are travelling alone then this does not mean you are sad and lonely this can actually work in your favour -  Queue references to the film The Beach with Leo Di-Caprio who’s character did pretty well on his own in Thailand and this is not far from reality regarding meeting people from different nations and getting involved with activities with them.

One of the negatives of traveling alone is that the cost of most private hotel or private hostel rooms on Koh Phangan, and indeed the rest of Thailand can be a cost issue.

A member of Phanganist HQ has travelled thailand alone and as he has a major snoring issue, staying in Hostel dorms is not an option as keeping everyone awake all night while you have a perfect night's sleep can lead to some funny but angry looks over breakfast in a morning.

There are not many hotels who offer a single room on Koh Phangan and indeed the rest of Asia, as most are double or twin rooms which can be the only option if you do not like dorm rooms, but as you are alone you will be paying for somebody to stay in the private room who is not there and this obviously doubles your cost.

However if you are a single traveller and have no problem staying in dorm rooms then this is the best way to meet people as you share everything and you will definitely find a buddy on the same wavelength in the Hostel which on this Island are great fun all day and at night.

On a positive note the people of Koh Phangan who travel alone will find it's very easy to get involved in activities at the brilliant Hostels on the island where you will find like minded people who will end up being your friends for life.

The Hostels on the island are experts at getting everyone to join in activities together, you will meet women (or men depending on your choice in life) not only in the hostel but also on the trips and excursions they arrange and this will bring you closer to others on the island.

They will also have taxis going to the major parties and you will find it is impossible to not get chatting to someone who you will eventually be partying the night away with - you can then suffer your hangover with them the next day.

There are football tournaments and friendly football matches at Blue Dream Hostel in their 'Phangan Arena' every day at 6pm and this is not only great exercise it will bring you together with people with a common interest.

Muay Thai is another great way of spending your time and although this is obviously a tough sport it is very safe to join in as a beginner and there will be a teacher to talk you through the basics and protect you from any danger.

One of the things to look out for and be careful of as a single male is the beautiful Thai women that all of a sudden appear out of nowhere. Whilst most of these women are up for a good time and a good laugh remember this is Thailand, and like anywhere in the world if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

So being alone on Koh Phangan as a male in our experience and the rest of the other solo travellers experience, you will not be on your own for long.

The other option is if you like your own company and want to stay alone seeing this beautiful Island then you have the freedom to go anywhere at any time without having to think of others...this sounds selfish but remember this is your trip so it is your choice.

Please remember if you are on your own to always tell someone where you are going whether it be out for a walk, out on your motorbike and especially if you are going swimming in the Sea.

Just mention this to the hostel/hotel staff before you go so if you are unfortunately in an accident then it is obviously good that someone knows where you have set out for the day or the night.

So enjoy yourselves solo guys, join in with others or simply have your own time and space.

Be safe, use your common sense and you will find Koh Phangan a place you will never forget for the rest of your life.

Most people either come back to The Crystal Island or simply love it that much you will end up sorting your Visa out to stay here forever!!!
