Happy Food is a charitable initiative set up to provide food and basic necessities for people living on Koh Phangan due to the current COVID-19 situation. Thankfully, we currently do not know of people who are ill on the island, yet the economic impact of the virus on border lockdowns and tourism will be felt for many months as many have been left unemployed and struggling to support themselves.
The Organizers
This amazing project is being organized by Khun Sontaya Saeyo, a former monk from Chaloklum in collaboration with other Thai community leaders, funded by donation with transparency oversight by foreign residents with business experience. The oversight team is led by Khun Kittisak Norheim, a former captain in the UN peacekeeping forces.
The Goal
Happy Food is now launching a crowdfunding campaign and could really do with your support. Here’s the goal:
To provide two meals a day for 2,000 people over 90 days, we need to raise 9,000,000 baht to achieve that goal as each meal only costs 25 baht. I know that seems like a lot. But we actually just need 2,000 people to sponsor 1 person's food each month.
That's just 1500 baht/month for each person - that’s less than $50 dollars.
Together, we can make this happen.
The Collaboration
Happy Food is working alongside other initiatives on the island to provide food, to ensure that people living anywhere on the island will be fed. All of the involved are volunteering and each baht spent is recorded, ensuring 100% of your donations go to those most in need.
The beautiful Koh Phangan community has come together in an inspiring way, with many offering to volunteer, and donating their money, time, and dry food products.
The Results
During the past week, an estimated 2500 meals and food bags have been distributed daily on the island, thanks to the support of many amazing, kind-hearted people working together.
