DJ Rob Gritton at the Jungle Experience party Koh Phangan

DJ Rob Gritton resident DJ at the Jungle Experience party and playing in most of Koh Phangan parties, is returning to KP after having some gigs at Quinte Club in Kuala Lampur. Rob played with DJ Kuma, who played at the Jungle Experience party on the 3rd of August.

What is your KL connection?
Back in April this year, I played at Quinte Club in KL alongside Aaron Fevah. The night was called One Night In KL, which followed on from the previous nights I was involved in (One Night In Bangkok and One Night In Samui) and met Vimal Kuma there as he is the resident DJ and is responsible for bringing in the DJs for the club...

I got on very well with Kuma, and I like how he runs the music policy for Quinte Club; he wants a particular style of music and a DJ who brings the underground sound to the party... I fit into this bracket, and they were keen to get me back; it just so happens I regularly go to KL to get my visa, so when chatting with Kuma last time he was in Koh Phangan, we set up some dates...

I played there Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of September and enjoyed it, especially the Sunday (Monday was a public holiday, so the place was packed until 7 am). The best thing about this club is that people go there to enjoy music and it has a strict underground policy people know this and come from all over the city to find it... It has a reputation for its music which in Asia can be hard to find, so anyone into the underground scene if you find yourself in KL, then I highly recommend you find Quinte Club on Heritage Row... You'll love it!!

Where did you play, and what kind of club?
Quinte Club on two nights, I suppose it is a medium-sized club with a capacity of 2-300 people... Located in central KL, there is an entry fee... Friendly people inside, excellent bar staff, unique cocktails, and they make a great show setting fire to the bar while I was playing and juggling with the glasses and bottles, etc... Amazing!!

How was it to play there? What is the difference between KP and Europe?
I enjoyed my set as, as I mentioned before, the people went there to hear underground music, so they understand the music and enjoy it, and I really could see from the response in the crowd that it is a proper underground club full of real clubbers... For example, Ko,h Phangan, you do get a lot of people who turn up at underground parties who are not into the scene, don't understand the music, and probably want something a bit more commercial. However, I find underground house music is quite accessible for most tastes, and to be fair, most people can get their groove on...

I do think, after walking down the beach during the last Full Moon, there needs to be an underground house stage on the beach as I noticed other than Zoom bar and Sun Rise, every different location on the beach plays commercial electro/pop, I think this is giving the Full Moon party a bad name in the eyes of the seasoned clubber... So come on, Haad Rin, someone down on that beach gets some house music playing. There is plenty of good house DJs on the island. Use them!!

Next plan on KP for this month?
Well, I never usually know where I am playing too in advance on Koh Phangan, probably because I live there, and I generally find out just before the gig...

I arrive back in Koh Phangan on Thursday 20th of September. I play alongside DJ Snoopoid and Jourdan Bordes that night at Revival @ Electronic Lounge every Thursday, so we are trying to raise awareness about that one... Thursday 20th, we are doing a warm-up for Jungle Experience, and you can get a taxi to Jungle Experience from here...
Then I have been confirmed for the next Pirates Bar, which will be towards the end of the month, possibly the 29th of September, and as I always say other random last-minute parties, I kind of get roped into the previous minute!!!

I love having fun!! x
