Have you ever met Joyce at the pier? We’re sure many of you have stopped by to say hello or even been to ask her questions about your stay on the island.
Our bubbly helpful friend popped in to the Phanganist office to tell us more about her job with the Tourist Police here on Koh Phangan…

So Joyce, what is your Koh Phangan story?
I come from the South near Malaysia but I have lived here a long time. I came about 10 years ago to come and look at a job by myself.
I got the job firstly with a diving school in Koh Tao and worked as a guide on a boat.
When did you begin with the Tourist Police?
5 years ago when they came to ask me at my travel counter here if I wanted to volunteer.

What do you do?
I help people with information and recommend motorbikes for rent and everything else that you would want to know!
What sorts of problems do you deal with?
They have problems with motorbike accidents and after Full Moon they sometimes have no ticket back to Samui or they lose everything and some can’t remember the accommodation where they are staying.
I first help with taking them to sit down, to relax, give them a drink and take some time and then make a map and show them.

Do you like your job?
Yes I like to talk to tourists, to see them smiling and make them happy.
What should tourists do to keep safe?
When they rent a motorbike they should make sure they’re safe and keep their money in a safety box. Keep passports safe and at the parties they should not sleep on the beach.
Have you seen Phangan change much?
Koh Phangan has not changed a lot, it’s still quiet and nice
Do you ever experience anything really crazy?
The people are not too crazy haha, not much but only after Full Moon, that’s it. Sometimes they just lose their friends or boyfriend or girlfriend and they are crying so I take care of them.
What do you like to do when you’re not working?
Relaxing, watching TV, spending time at home and going to my friends shop.
