11 Aug 2020

Following yesterday’s story about Thailand’s border remaining closed to tourists until next year there is some other rumour on the horizon...

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports will propose opening five islands to foreign tourists, emphasizing confidence in both tourist and community safety measures.

Ms Wanthana Jaengprajak, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Tourism and Sports, today announced that the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will propose the opening of five islands, including Phuket Island in Phuket, Phi Phi Island in Krabi and Samui, Phangan and Tao

Islands in Surat Thani, to the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), as these areas could be easily regulated.

There was a meeting of heads of government agencies and private organizations from all three provinces to prepare the areas by determining entry requirements and evaluating the level of approval of people in the communities. The private sector agreed quite clearly on a common approach to safety and a new normal tourism style that still adheres to the principles of face masks and social distance wearing in public health.
