Thailand is warming up to cannabis with the announcement that some hospitals can now legally produce traditional cannabis-containing medicine as long as an expert in traditional Thai medicine is obliged to prepare them.
Traditional medicines are common disease treatments in some provinces, says Bangkok Post's Thai Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine. The medicines can only be from among the 16 recipes allowed by the Thai government which include cannabis as the basic ingredients, the department's director general, Marut Jirasetthasiri, said.

The change is hoping to answer the fact that more people have begun seeking treatment using traditional medicine, Marut said.
291 units have been established across Thailand at state-run medical outlets that can dispense cannabis-mixed drugs. So far this year, the Bangkok Post reports, patients have been provided with 60,000-plus rounds of treatments.

In addition, the green light has been given to 152 health promotion hospitals to expand their cannabis farms to meet demand for weed-based medicines.
Recreational cannabis is still illegal in Thailand but for medical and research purposes marijuana is legal. However, even if weed importing into the country remains a no-go for medical purposes.
There have also been proposals to allow humans in their homes to grow as many as six marijuana plants.
