World-class beaches on Koh Samui are what, along with its incredible nightlife, the island is famous for. But it's also full of lovely places to hang out with great coffee and fresh, tasty food during the day. When it comes to coffee, people are quite the connoisseur today, including backpackers, visitors and ex-pats, and so, correctly, the island has developed to accommodate this. Depending on the various kinds of coffee, environment and food that go along with the brown pick-me-up drinks, you will come to have your preferences. In all areas of the island, there are several high-quality coffee shops and stalls selling more Thai-style sweet iced coffees so that you can get a caffeine hit while enjoying the lovely 'cafe culture in a paradise setting.

Coffee Koh Samui

Thailand and Coffee

To find iced coffee along with condensed milk, mini Nescafe espresso cans or a cappuccino straight up, you don't have to waste much time walking the streets of Thailand. A huge part of Thai life is the coffee scene nowadays.
Of course, if you're in one of the major tourist centres, you're never far from Starbucks. The world's national chains are popping up all over the place. Yet there are some unbelievable independent cafés as well. Be sure to try the freshly made, ice-cool coffees from the street vendors too!

Thailand Coffee

The Farming of Coffee

Arabica beans are now the spinner of riches in Thailand, but the Robusta plant was the preferred bean at first. This is because farmers must rapidly clear large swaths of the rainforest to set up crops. As the coffee culture has grown and the quality has become more distinguished, the higher-yielding bean has fallen out of favour.
Today, Thailand's agriculture depends on the more exportable Arabica beans. The bean flavour is much smoother, sweeter and tastier than the Robusta. As the company expanded, more giant corporations started exploiting the land and farmers. Thankfully, more and more people have begun to see the benefits of transparent and fair trading. This means that more and more local producers receive adequate pay for their work.
