You must of noticed the spirit house by now, the small shrines/tiny temples that are often outside most homes and businesses here on the island and all over the Country, these are what’s known as Spirit Houses.

Although they have similar features to Buddhist statues the spirit houses are not Buddhist but come from a time long before Buddha where people worshipped spirits. They are dedicated to honour the guardians of the land and pay respect to Mother Earth.

It is believed that spirits lived on the land before humans did and some believe they are the souls of ancestors also from the land and Thais build the houses so the spirits can live in them as otherwise if there is no spirit house they would live in the main house and cause problems.

So as to not unsettle the spirits they build them these houses to keep the peace and also they do not forget about them.

The spirits are thought to be very happy that humans have made the effort to build them these houses and so in return they bring good luck and fortune to the land or business which it is settled.

Offerings are made to the spirits every day, Thai people believe that the spirits preferred colour is red and so this is why you will see red drinks a lot! Gifts of food, incense, candles and figurines are made so that the good luck and wealth will continue.

The construction of the house is also well considered including its colour which can relate to the owner's birthday. One rule is that the spirit house can not be in the shadow of the main house and a local Guru is asked in terms of placing a new spirit house.

So next time you pass one of these little spirit houses make sure to give them a ‘Wai’ and they may bring you and your house or hotel some good luck!
