The Thai government has agreed to reduce the mandatory quarantine for certain types of international tourists. The measure has been approved by the national committee on communicable diseases, which is part of the Public Health Ministry, based on the fact that a global vaccination drive is leading to a gradual reduction in case numbers.
According to a Nation Thailand report, the following international arrival categories are entitled to a reduced quarantine period of 7 to 10 days:
Foreigners in possession of a negative Covid test result and a valid Covid-19 vaccination certificate that is no more than 3 months old and no less than 14 days old: Quarantine for 7 days
Thai nationals that do not have a negative Covid test result but have a valid Covid-19 vaccination certificate that is no more than 3 months old and no less than 14 days old: Quarantine for 7 days
Foreigners without a vaccination certificate but a negative Covid test result: Quarantine for ten days
Due to the highly contagious nature of the South African variant that has recently emerged, the reduced quarantine will not apply to travelers from any part of Africa. All arrivals from Africa will still be subjected to a 14-day waiting period.
The reduction of quarantine is one of several steps being considered to support the country's battered tourism sector revival. From next month, officials plan to introduce "area quarantine" in major tourist destinations.
Foreign tourists will only be required to remain in their hotel room for the first three days of their 14-day quarantine under the proposal. They'll be tested for Covid-19 during the first three days, and if they're negative, they'll be free to leave their room and roam the resort for the remainder of their stay. They will not be permitted to leave the resort until the 14-day quarantine period has been completed.
