Pattaya police state that they have found a variety of people demanding kickbacks from hotels in return for being classified as a quarantine center for Covid-19. Nonetheless, as neither of the hotels concerned made a lawsuit, there was no penalty against the persons in dispute.

According to a story in the Chiang Rai Times, with hotels around the city shut down owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, several individuals have attempted to manipulate the fear of many in the hospitality business. The Pattaya police announcement comes in the aftermath of the government's promises to clamp down on such bribery and apprehend those responsibly. Deputy national police chief Suwat Chaengyodsuk, however, claims no hotels have taken any further steps and thus can not be prosecuted against the people. He also states none of those listed is representatives of government nor does they seem to have ties with any politicians.

PM Prayut Chan-o-cha is seeking civil proceedings against those responsible, while the Ministry of Public Health is preparing to lodge a slander case against the wrongdoers for abusing the reputation of the government.

Hotels chosen as government quarantine facilities must follow stringent requirements, including separate air-conditioning and non-carpeted flooring systems for each bed. It's reported that about 10,000 hotel rooms are being included in the compulsory government quarantine of repatriated Thai people in Pattaya alone.
