We met the lovely Milena not long ago when she came in to talk about her feather hair extensions amongst her other passions of Tantra and Yoga. She was kind enough to offer Emma a yoga lesson at Phanganist HQ.
I liked Milena from the beginning, just like I like most people I meet here but she happened to come for the first time on a day where I was very stressed from a lot of work. Her presence and outlook on life inspired me automatically, she cheered me up straight away, I realised that none of the stress really mattered.
She has a wonderful sweet energy that puts you at peace and from what she had told me about her take on yoga, I knew that this would not be a rushed session.
In her own words - 'It works not only on a physical level but also by focusing the mind on the energy flow it helps to purify energy channels in the body'.
I have done yoga before but never studied it properly as I am more attracted to more physical excersise like swimming but since being on Koh Phangan no one can escape from the subject of yoga so I have been wanting to learn properly for a while but of course do not have the time to dedicate.
There are a lot of different types of yoga now, Yoga mixed with fitness and not forgetting Vera's yoga stretching which I have done with her so I was looking forward to going back to basics with it.
We started off with a kind of simple meditation, Milena puts you at ease and takes you to a calm place so that you can begin the session, it is wonderful to open your eyes and have hers in front of you, beaming with smiles.
One of the great things is Milena's voice, it's like it is from a fairytale or one of those sleep help cds. I ask her afterwards if anyone else has commented on her voice and she explains that she has a different way of speaking for yoga and I can tell you that it works!
We did many assana's from Sun Salutation to the Dancer and we always had time to rest in between in the child position to feel what sensations are happening in your body, to really listen to your heart and the changes within.
Milena talks you through the names of what you do as you go along, using there traditional name, Surya Namaskar, and their common name, sun salutation for example.
Although Milena is the sweetest lady, you are worked hard, but it is very calm and peaceful, you forget about many worries and focus on the beauty of the moment. She teaches you to use the earth and the heavens and makes you feel a big love in your heart, you cannot help but smile.
I found it quite a healing session in fact, it's the new year and what better way to begin than with spreading some light within your own body.
Milena is available for group and private classes and she also teaches at Samma Karuna and Orion, you can see her contact details and read more about her in her interview below.
Thank you Milena.
