It can be a daunting prospect if you have to visit the hospital in a foreign country or find yourself suddenly in one after an accident.

You shouldn't just leave an injury or an ailment though as it could get worse, especially in this tropical climate, seeking professional medical advice is the best thing to do.

To make you feel more at ease we spoke to the team at Bandon Hospital to find out a step by step guide of what happens when you visit the hospital and that it doesn’t need to be something to be scared of.

When you first arrive at the hospital the first thing you will be greeted with is a very warm welcome! The hospital staff want you to feel as comfortable as possible and will then will ask you nicely what has happened/what your symptoms are.

Before you receive any treatment they will explain why they need to administer it to you and how it will help.

You will be with the doctor who explains everything and you can talk to them, if it is not serious then the consultation will be done in the private examination room but all treatments are given in the Emergency Room just in case.

All of the doctors at Bandon Hospital speak very good fluent English!

If you would like the company of friends or family then this is allowed and helps with reassurance and in case you are admitted and need to stay overnight then your friend or family member can stay with you at no extra charge.

The doctor will visit you twice a day or more if needed to check on you and give you more information and you can always call for a nurse at any time.

If you have a wound which is not so serious then you can be treated as an outpatient and just visit the hospital each day to have the wound cleaned.

Although there may be temptation to clean the wound yourself it is highly recommended to have it cleaned at the hospital by professionals where the equipment is all sterile. At home or the place you stay you run the risk of the equipment not being clean, dust and
bacteria and using your hands and it is easy to get an infection this way made more risky with the tropical climate.

When you are an inpatient at Bandon Hospital you are allowed visitors 24 hours a day, unless you are sleeping that is! It’s good to know that if you are on the other side and one of the friends or family it’s important to visit your loved one if they have to stay in hospital as without close family here and being away from home it will make the patient more comfortable and reassured during their treatment.

Feel assured that you can ask any questions if something happens to you, the staff here speak fluent English and want your experience at the hospital to be as you want it to be!
