Hey Philip, so you have been on Koh Phangan for three weeks now, how have you found it?
This is my first time on Phangan and I have really fell in love with this island. I have met a lot of super nice people from the first moment as Naq put me into the nice little techno scene and I think I met the right people straight away.
The island itself is amazing, if it’s your first time then you have to fall in love with this paradise place. We were on Koh Tao for a bit but we came back as we love it here more.
Tell us what got you started as a DJ?
I started when I was eighteen, I bought myself two turntables and I learnt. I stayed home for a year and taught myself to mix one record into the other, this was my main point of starting.
Then I started in Berlin clubs and after a while a booking agent asked me to come over to them so this was the point where I went out in the world. I played Berlin for three years then started to travel round the world.
Where are some of your favourite places to play and why?
My first favourite is DC10 Ibiza which I think is one of the best in the world. I played there last year two times and I will play again this year. This is a really energetic and crazy place to play and make a party.
Also Ushuaia in Ibiza was great to play because you have an amazing big crowd and fire show and it was really intense as well.
I also love to pay in Berghain in Berlin, for me it’s the best place in Berlin. It is really well known and it is a gay club but the parties there are amazing! The soundsystem is great there!
The Goa place in Rome is amazing too and I love to play in festivals around the world, this is important as well.
Can you explain your style to us and how you want people to feel?
I play Techno music. I love to play with three decks, I play really powerful music so this is why I use three so that the energy never stops, it never breaks. I like that the people are dancing and that they have no minute to rest.
I want people coming out of their body, to almost have an out of body experience.
Where have you played on Koh Phangan and how was it?
The first party was Night Nature, where Naq brought me in, he is a really good dj as well. I felt really comfortable because they invited me into their ‘Night Nature family’ and the party was amazing. I think it will grow up really soon as it’s started good already. You should go to the next party which is tonight!
The next party was Jungle Experience, this was crazy, I heard there were around seven thousand people and I met all these other Berlin djs which was really nice as we’re all friends. The party crowd was colourful and crazy and I loved it!
The next party will be Merkaba, I have heard a lot of really good things about this place and I really like the promoter so I’m really looking forward to this special party venue on the island. I will play there with Naq, Andre Crom and a lot of other people.
Then I have to go back to rainy, cold Berlin.
Can you compare the Koh Phangan party scene to the Berlin scene?
The first thing is that Koh Phangan’s party scene is much more colourful than Berlin, the party people dress up and they really give a lot of energy into five hours. In Berlin the people are dancing for more like three days but not so powerfully or energetic.
Berlin people are a bit more picky about the music but people in Phangan really enjoy the moment, I saw a lot of hands up and smiling faces which I miss a little in Berlin.
I had seen before that Koh Phangan was more about Psychedelic music and Goa Trance but I’m really, really happy that underground music comes over to Phangan and it’s really big here I think.
What will you be doing for the rest of the year?
Travelling around the world and playing a lot of music in different countries but one point that I would like to say is that in the Techno scene all around the world people understand each other from the first moment, there’s a big connection between the Techno people and I am really looking forward to meeting all those nice, crazy people this year.
I started my own label called ‘Out of Mind’ so this is my main project, we have a lot of good artists coming out soon like Kaiser Disco, Onno, Ninetoes, Davide Squilace, Mirko Loko, Uner and a lot of other good artists.
For myself, I release and still will release on a lot of other labels like Moon Harbour, Thisandthat and more.
How did you get to where you are today?
I think it’s important to make music, to create your own style, work hard, have good connections and a lot of good management. Also a little bit of luck.
What have you been enjoying about Phangan when you’re not playing?
Definitely snorkelling, running around with Naq, the nice people and most importantly sitting at the pool and ‘dolce far niente’ doing sweet nothing.
Do you have a life philosophy?
Work hard, play hard and never stop striving!
