Dj name: Leon M
Country: France

Leon first visited Koh Phangan when he was about seventeen years old, like most people on their first visits it was for the Full Moon party. He extended his trip for a week and didn’t return until fifteen years later but he has been here ever since. He had wanted to leave France and was actually meant to LA but just stop off in Phangan for a months holiday but has actually now been here for three years.
Leon started to DJ around age fourteen,

“I went to the scratch academy in LA twice to learn skills then started to play in France first for pleasure then step by step into parties”.

What kind of music do you like to play?

Anything, I am able to play anything now. Everyday I practice in my shop Academix with or without customers, if it is just for me then I like drum and bass. I have at least an hour a day of drum n bass. I love to play hip hop too.

What made you set up Academix?

Because there was nothing here, no place where you could go to just practice. The first year i came I was looking for a place where I could spin, not learn just spin. So I had been running all over the island and found nothing so decided to ship all my equipment from France to here and open the place. It was a bit risky as no one knew me.

And what does Academix offer?

You can come for lessons or just to practice if you already have skills. You can buy equipment, we do repairs and we sell. We have pretty much anything you need like controllers, Technics decks, Cdj’s, computers and a studio upstairs for production.

What has been the reaction?

Now that I am looking back, I think the first year people needed to trust me and test me. It has been difficult but now I can tell that everyone and all the Dj’S know the shop. We have got some big names in like Nakadia.

What are your current and future projects?

My family of course come top of the list! I have a two old boy. Of course I will continue working on my business and try to get more involved with party projects.

What do you do in your free time?

Haha I have no free time. I’m always downloading and looking for new music. Even today I have six  rounds of one hour lessons, sometimes it can go to ten! I love what I do because we are here and I’m doing what I like. What a better place to find inspiration?!

Do you have a life philosophy?

DIY, do it yourself.
