Hello from Koh Phangan! Have you ever been to Thailand before?
Greetings! No, I have never actually got to that part of the world. I rarely have holidays as this job takes up all of my time, plus I'm always travelling so when I do get time off I don't want to see an airport!

I once stopped in Bangkok airport in Thailand whilst on my way to Australia, I stuck my head out the door and remember it smelled good!

So I'm looking forward to this big time.

How was 2015 for you and what were your main projects?

The year itself was a really tough one for me. I lost four of my very close friends which was difficult to go through. On the plus side, I finally managed to release my twenty five year anniversary album 'Dead Planet'.

This was a massive one for me, two years work and twenty four tracks long, it nearly killed me, literally! A highlight for me though was getting Robert Smith from The Cure to sing on a track, damn proud of that!

You are playing at Eclipse Festival, can you tell us more about this…
Well I have played and been to many eclipse festivals during the twenty seven years of Eat Static and they don't get any less exciting to be a part of, anything to do with our universe has me in awe.

I still remember the very first eclipse I saw when I was a small boy, my father was an engineer and brought home some welding goggles so we could stare right into the sun as it happened...mind blowing!

And what kind of vibe will you try to create there?

The same as I try to do in any place, to unite people with a magical vibe, to take people on a wild journey, to unleash all kinds of mayhem! Gigs are very primal for me, its that ancient power of tribes gathering and dancing together to a pounding beat.

I like lots of noise and to go right off someplace out of this world, escapism is essential for our spirituality..

What are some of the best gigs you’ve played and why?
I enjoy them all usually, it never really matters where I am and seeing as my first ever gig was in 1979 then you can imagine what a blur it’s all become. Some places have been amazing for the sheer views themselves - Japan, Mexico, Israel etc.

I have also had many an amazing show at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in the UK, a very special place for me is Glastonbury, it was the very first festival that I ever went to around 1984.

What do you use for inspiration for your music?

Whatever is going on around me, life, other music (in particular world music), the equipment I use, the travelling I have done. It all ends up in the mix somehow, I never get stuck for ideas, I start every piece of music from scratch - a completely blank page as I have always hated repeating myself.

I enjoy trying out stuff in all genres too as I love most of the styles in the electronic scene.

I think this is why my stuff always sounds fresh and has a lot of energy because I'm not getting stuck at one tempo all of the time.

You’re known for your live shows, what for you makes a dj set stand out amongst others?
Well I am pretty old school so I like to hear dj's mixing properly as I do myself, getting seamless mixes that create their own vibe.

My problem with a lot of artists these days are the lack of characters and the fact that a lot of them do not want to sound unique, who wants to be a sheep? Psychedelia is about the unknown, to not know where you are going, to have a magical amazing journey, haha or maybe my ideas have become obsolete!

So do you think there will be a special energy at Eclipse Festival because of the actual Eclipse that its celebrating?

We shall see! Not having ever been to this area will make it very special for me especially as this year I am turning fifty! (did I REALLY just tell you that?)

What would you say to aspiring djs and producers wanting to play around the globe?
Do something original! Take risks! Be loud and proud! Follow your instincts! LOVE every minute of what you do and mean every note that you play!

Experimentation = PROGRESS!

Enjoy the local people in these places, immerse yourself in the local cultures, this is what makes you YOU! Enjoy it while you’re here..

And what is your life philosophy?

Haha see the last answer! All of the above!
