The Harbour Department is now planning a new ferry service across the Gulf of Thailand from Sattahip to Prachuap Khiri Khan, and down to Songkhla in the far south of Thailand.
The Harbour Department listed many reasons why it would be beneficial for the region. They cited improved logistics, increased competition, economic improvements, better environmental performance, less road traffic, and fewer road accidents.
The current road journey is 1,130 km long and takes up to 24 hours. The new service will offer a 20 hours travel duration with a 611 km route.
The Harbour Department started an immediate examination of the ports' readiness, focusing on their size and safety features.
Test runs for the service are scheduled to start as early as next month, allowing passengers to join. A preferred port for Prachuap Khiri Khan and pricing information are yet to be revealed.
