It is rumored that the fifth-generation ( 5 G) telecoms network is accelerating the spread of the novel coronavirus, as the cellular network suppresses the immune systems of people.

The fact is that there is no evidence that 5G has anything to do with the spread of COVID-19, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and some fact-checking organizations.

Full Fact, a British independent fact-checking charity, has debunked such rumor by saying, "The main implication of the claim — that 5G can impact immune systems — is completely unfounded. There is no evidence to link the new coronavirus to 5G, "Business Insider reported.

5 G is the next generation of wireless network technology offering faster connection speeds than its previous generations, such as 4 G, 3 G or 2 G, and 5 G mobile data is transmitted over radio waves — a small portion of the entire electromagnetic spectrum (including microwaves, visible light, and X-rays).

"These radio waves are non-ionizing, meaning that they do not damage the DNA inside cells, as X-rays, gamma rays and UV rays can do," Daily Echo, a local newspaper in Southampton, quoted a Full Fact report as saying.

The World Health Organisation has stated that viruses can not fly on cell networks or radio waves. "COVID-19 is transmitted via the respiratory droplets when a person who is contaminated coughs, sneezes, or talks. People can also get infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their eyes, mouth or nose, "it said.

The international health body also found out that COVID-19 is growing in other countries without 5G broadband networks.

Full Fact also noted that many of the hardest-hit countries do not have 5 G coverage, for example, Iran. Iran, which had reported 160,696 COVID-19 cases so far, has no 5G masts.

Australian communications minister Paul Fletcher also warned people in late May about misinformation linking COVID-19 to 5G mobile technology.

"Any suggestion of a link between 5 G and coronavirus is utterly baseless," Fletcher said.
