Vientiane Areas Guide
Which Neighborhood Fits Your Trip?
Vientiane is a small capital, but where you stay still changes the feel of your trip. The main choice is simple: do you want to be able to walk to the river, restaurants, and bars, or would you rather stay in a quieter residential area and use rides to get around? Distances are not huge, but heat, uneven pavements, and traffic can make them feel bigger than they look on a map.
Most short-stay visitors are happiest near the Mekong or in the central grid around Setthathirath Road and Ban Anou. Those areas make eating out and sightseeing easy. If you want calmer nights, more space, or a longer-stay setup, Sisattanak or That Luang can work better. The railway station area is mainly for convenience before or after a train, not for seeing the city.
