1. Know your camera
Okay this might seem obvious, but most of us don’t know half of the features our phone has. So the first thing you need to do is know your software. Although some things are the same for any phone, it’s important to know exactly what you’re working with. The ‘scenes’ feature is quite useful when you need a specific type of light for a picture. Some smartphones also let you manage the ISO settings, meaning that you get to choose ‘how sensitive your camera is to light’; so higher ISO equals brighter pictures. Just be careful not to overdo it in order to avoid getting ‘noisy’ pictures.

2. Framing

This is probably the most undervalued feature of all. Use the framing guides in your phone to organise your picture and highlight certain areas. The horizontal lines usually follow the line of the water or land. This way you manage the “information” of your picture to give it balance. Try it and you’ll see the difference.

3. Flash

The idea is generally to try and avoid using the flash at all as it gives an unflattering brightness to the picture. So try to make the best of natural light along with other camera settings such as the ISO. If you must use it though, you can use a flash diffuser (like a piece of white paper or plastic) to spread the light and avoid that ugly glare.

4. Move around

When you’re about to take a picture it might be interesting to try different angles. Instead of just standing in front of the subject you can play a bit with perspective: try taking the picture from a lower or higher angle, use the panoramic feature or move closer or further from the object. You can just take a bunch of different shots and then select the one you like the most. You might find some new, interesting pictures you hadn’t thought of.

5.  Apps

The ultimate trick is to have a good post-edition app to perfect the final details. There are a huge number of options out there so you can just choose the one that works better for you.  One very popular one is VSCO Camera; it has a premium version with advanced options but you can do great things with just the free version.

These are the tips our traveller’s have tried but you can always find new ways to document your travels. Just be creative and have fun!
