There is a local Thai experience that is worth a visit and takes place each year called ‘Naga Fireball Festival’.
This year it will take place on 5th - 13th October 2019.
The festival takes place along the Mekong River in Nong Khai and Bueng Kan near Chumphon so not far from our island of Koh Phangan.
The fireballs are a spectacular phenomenon and come from the mighty Mekong River each year.
Some believe the Naga – half human and half serpent creatures live in the Mekong and light the fireballs at the end of Buddhist Lent or Ok Phansa to pay respect to Buddha.
The scientific theory is that the fireballs are methane gas from underground which float to the surface of the Mekong and then burn up in the air.
The fireballs usually appear in or around the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 11th lunar month.
For tourists wanting to discover more of the area there are a choice of attractions and scenic locations to visit before or after the festival including Wat Pho Chai Temple, Than Thong Waterfall, Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and Phu Huay Ei San.
So why not take a quick holiday from Phangan to go witness this majestic wonder!
