Emirates is honored to support the newest global film "What is human trafficking?" It's a Penalty Campaign Launched in collaboration with actor Liam Neeson.

The short film is intended to educate the world about the misconceptions and the fact of global human trafficking and exploitation.

Emirates aims to shed a light on this global problem and help more people realize what human trafficking is by broadcasting this special message on its ice inflight entertainment system on all flights from October.

Through its security division, Emirates works with government agencies and organizations including the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the US Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), and the United Nations Office on Drug and Crimes (UNODC) on efforts to improve awareness of human trafficking and co-operate on effective response strategies within the air transport industry.

Recognizing that frontline employees at the airport and onboard flights are unique with increasing awareness, it is possible to observe and report more suspected cases, thereby protecting and preventing others at risk from being victims.

Human trafficking involves the movement, by force, threats, abduction, or deception, of people inside a country or across borders into conditions of exploitation against their will. In 2017, the international labor organization Organization (ILO) reported that there were 24.9 million trafficked people around the world (the average of Australia's population), of which 75% are women and children.

As one of the world's largest connections of people and areas, Emirates is committed to helping stem this crime against humanity.

Partnerships and training

Through its Security Unit, Emirates works with government agencies and organizations including the International Air Transport Association ( IATA), the United States Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) on measures to increase awareness of human trafficking and cooperate on effective response strategies in the airline industry.

Recognizing that frontline staff at the airport and onboard flights are uniquely placed to search into this form of crime, Emirates has invested several years in training programs to help its airport and crew workers become aware of this crime and give them the tools to identify and report suspected human cut trafficking cases to appropriate law enforcement organizations.

At Dubai International Airport's Emirates center, an aviation security team receives special training from embassy partners about how to identify potential traffickers when checking travel documents and conducting passenger profiling and behavioral analysis.

Emirates' crew and customer-facing ground staff have access to an e-learning module specially developed with the UK Home Office on 'On-board Crime Reduction.'

One of the first airlines to roll out this form of training, which encourages employees to be more careful about customer behavior, particularly behaviors associated with someone who might be engaged in trafficking or someone who could be a victim.

The course provides scenarios on what crew might encounter onboard and guidance on how to respond. The Emirates Group has an anti-slavery and human trafficking policy, publishing annual transparency statements on the Modern Slavery Act as part of its ongoing commitment to combating this crime.
