During the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, the Thai Ministry of Public Health worked with the Ministry of Education to brace for the reopening of schools nationwide on July 1st to ensure the safety of students.
Dr. Panpimon Wipulakorn, Health Department Director-General, said today that students are at higher risk of infection in classrooms than shoppers in malls, as they spend 5-6 hours together during the day of school.
She acknowledged that making sure students follow the safety advisories, such as wearing face masks at school all the time, constantly washing their hands and physical distancing, is challenging.
Statistics suggest that 3.8 percent of all infections of coronavirus occur among people between the ages of 10 and 19, and they typically catch the disease from other family members.
Dr. Panpimon said that while infected children do not always have symptoms and their disease is never serious, at school they are still carriers and can infect their peers.
A handbook on how to act and how to defend oneself from the pathogen has been provided to all classrooms so that both teachers and students can remain updated.
Dr. Panpimon advised parents not to stress much, but to educate their children about how to defend themselves from the virus and to interact with other parents and teachers online.
