A team of firefighters in northern Thailand have been compelled to climb a tree to avoid a heard of the wild elephants they came across. The firefighters had been trying to fight forest fires in Chiang Mai Province district.

The firefighters claimed they were searching for fires in the forest when they noticed a small group of wild elephants. The ran up a nearby tree in fear of their welfare and waited there until the elephants left.

Omkoi is the location of the Omkoi Wildlife Sanctuary, in the south of Chiang Mai Province. There are a variety of rare and protected animals at the sanctuary including Wild Asian elephants. That said, it is not that popular to come across wild elephants in the park as it has a small community.

The firefighters were in the region as part of province-wide measures to combat the fires. Some villagers start the fires to enrich the annual harvesting of mushrooms.
