Koh Phangan is set in the Gulf of Thailand, on this side of the mainland, on the East we are joined by the large Koh Samui and smaller Koh Tao. All of these three islands are in close proximity to Angthong Marine Park.
It is said that there are 42 islands that make up Angthong and as they are close to each other it makes a breathtaking sight for you to enjoy whilst sailing around them.
The islands are covered with tropical forests and named after their geography such as ‘Sleeping Cow Island’ and ‘Three Pillars Island’.
Angthong means ‘golden bowl’ and is protected since 1980 because of its natural beauty. All of the islands are uninhabited and undeveloped except for one.
You may have heard of the book and film ‘The Beach’, part of the story is actually set at Angthong and by visiting you will understand, however none of the film was filmed there.
Depending on which boat trip you go on will depend on whether you travel by speedboat or a larger slower boat. With a big boat it takes roughly 1.5 hours to reach Angthong, however it is a lovely pace to travel at in the morning with breakfast usually served, unwind and wake up and enjoy the trip on the sea.
If you are more impatient or don't like the slow boat journeys then you can opt for a speedboat trip however you won’t have the fun options of things such as a slide and sun deck to enjoy.
Once you arrive to Angthong you will be taken to the first island on your itinerary and have the option to either relax on the beautiful each and swim in the ocean or maybe there is a viewpoint to trek to?!
If you are on a large boat you may have the option to kayak from one point to another during your trip to the second or third island and also most trips will include lunch for you too!
One thing not to miss is the Emerald lagoon! You have to climb steep steps but it is totally worth the view to see this natural wonder.
Spending the day floating around Angthong is a once in a lifetime view for your eyes, prices can vary but are no more than 2000 Baht, usually around 1500 - 1800 Baht and are definitely worth it!
