The Thai-Malaysian border is expected to reopen this weekend to assist the failing rubber industry, causing local people to voice the fear that the change might result in an increase in new COVID 19 incidents. Even so, security authorities are assuring the public that there are intensive screening procedures in effect in preparation for the reopening.

Lt Gen Pornsak, commander of the Fourth Army Region, said all agencies in the southern border provinces and the Administrative Center of the Southern Border Provinces have set up a task force to screen people entering Thailand in readiness at the checkpoint. Officers foresee nearly 800 individuals a day to cross the border and are trained to keep everybody secure at the "manageable rates."

The SBPAC Secretary-General dismissed the speculation that up to 100,000 people might pour into Thailand at the border crossings, causing mayhem at the checkpoint, stating "these are just rumors because the amount of people who officially registered online to cross the embassy is below 8,000."
