On Koh Samui as on Koh Phangan, the best way to discover the island is definitely by motorbike. But we will never say enough, be careful on the road although they seem better maintained than Koh Phangan, there is more traffic.

One of the best things to do on Koh Samui is to visit the Big Buddha which will impress you for sure. You will see the golden 12 metre Buddha from several kilometres away and to visit this sacred place, be sure to wear long shorts and no beachwear to respect this symbol of enlightenment and purity.

You can also go to the famous waterfall Na Muang or ‘Purple Waterfall’ (because of the colour) which is popular to relax and swim. The falls are a good alternative to the beach, you could spend your entire day there hiking, picnicking, swimming and chilling.
The two main backpacker/commercial places to stay on Koh Samui are Chaweng beach and Lamai Beach, each spaced about 10km.

In Chaweng you will easily find places to enjoy the nightlife of Koh Samui, you can find bars and restaurants with fire dancers on the beach, nightclubs and Muay Thai stadiums.

Lamai is quieter than its big sister and the atmosphere is quite more laid back. This area is more for couples or older people. If you have the chance to come on Sunday to Lamai, you must go to the typical night market. The main road is privatised and it is where you can buy almost anything and eat thaï specialities.
