Phanganist sat down with a Leo beer and some gorgeous falafel and spoke with the owner Yaniv about ‘Five Minute Falafel’ in Thong Sala food market.

So Yaniv, tell us your Koh Phangan story…
The first time I visited the island was in 1994, it didn’t have anything electric, no phones or lights. It was warm and close, everyone was together and of course over time it has changed. I have been here for six years now.

Apart from the obvious reason (Yaniv being from Israel), why did you decide to open a falafel place?
It’s vegan, there are a lot of vegans on the island so falafel and hummus are our main dishes. It’s really tasty food and it’s healthy.

The pita is homemade which you can’t really get on Koh Phangan, so if you want to feel that authentic taste of pita then you can find it here.

I guess I didn’t know what to eat so I made a food business, ha-ha!

Do you have regular customers?
Yes, a lot. People call me and say ‘can you prepare me this, I come in twenty minutes, makes it like this etc’! It’s because I know a lot of people on the island.

It is really nice that people like it and give compliments.

What sorts of ingredients do you use?
The chickpeas are from India, a special kind of chickpea for hummus.

The falafel is a homemade recipe from my Grandmother and now the recipe is winning on the island!

So what do you enjoy about the island in your free time?
I enjoy the beach, the nature, a good massage and I like to play frisbee at sunset. This is an easy way of living, you can allow yourself time to do things, everyone is smiling and happy as they should be!

If you’re looking for something tasty, healthy and different from thai food then we really recommend going for a falafel at Five Minute Falafel.

There is a lot of love that goes into this food from Yaniv but also his staff, they are a really great team.

With bowls and bowls of chickpeas constantly being washed and soaked you can see that the hummus is island famous and when you taste it then you will realise why!

The falafel is served in the fresh, homemade pita, this pita is so tasty, just this alone dipped in the hummus can be enough to satisfy but you must taste the falafel.

The falafel is fresh, served with lots of tasty salad and tahini if you wish.

You can find them at Thong Sala food market in the seating area at the back, in fact, you won’t miss them! Enjoy!
