Our host for February is cultural researcher Viriya Sawangchot (Inter-Asia School, Bangkok), his theme is Kung-Fu films.

KUNG-FU
Martial arts are not originally meant for competition but for combat practices, which are practiced for a number of reasons: as self-defense, military, and spiritual development.

The martial arts films have received greater attention from world audiences since the 1970s. During the 1970s and 1980s, the most visible presence of martial arts films was the hundreds of kung fu and ninja films produced by the Shaw Brothers, Godfrey Ho, and other Hong Kong producers. Actually, the genre has been dominated by Hong Kong action cinema, peaking from 1971 with the rise of Bruce Lee until the mid-1990s with a general decline in the industry. Other notable figures in the genre include Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, and Donnie Yen.

With the aesthetic qualities of martial arts, these films seem to be arts created for violence, on the one hand, and, on the other, with the lens of philosophy, these films all were influenced by the Chinese philosophical and religious traditions.

INTER-ASIA SCHOOL BANGKOK
The program was co-organized by Inter-Asia School Bangkok. Inter-Asia School (IAS), an international non-profit organization initially established in 2010, is a minjian (民間) international organization dedicated to create new critical spaces of dialogues among Asian intellectuals and search for new modes of knowledge production for the staging and formation of the Asian circle of thoughts.

VIRIYA SAWANGCHOT
A cultural researcher based in Bangkok, Thailand. He is also a researcher/coordinator of Inter-Asia School Bangkok. He was an API senior fellow (2013-2014), Asian Public Intellectual program, Nippon Foundation, and has previously taught in Cultural Studies program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Thailand.
