Welcome to Koh Phangan Leagha so  how did you end up living in Kuala Lumpur?
My godfather lives in Malaysia and I have been going to Asia since a child, a cousin of mine is half Balinese.
I bought a one way ticket to KL with no fixed plans around six years ago.

Why Kuala Lumpur and what do you like about it?

I like music and travel, when I first arrived in KL I didn’t think there was an underground music scene, it seemed very commercial and I was not interested in that, so I would try to travel at every opportunity to get out of the city and go to the beach.

Whereas in the last couple of years since I have found the scene, I now want to stay at weekends. It’s fun and there is so much underground music that I didn’t know existed, a lot of places have opened up lately and also the opening hours have been extended.

There are so many new clubs now, a place called Red Room had Jamie Jones last week as their first international booking. They have a Funktion one soundsystem in there.

Not long ago some friends and I were leaving Elysium and first of all the sun came up whilst we were still in the club, that’s new, and secondly my ears were actually ringing on the descent from the club, definitely not the norm. There are four or five places that open until sunrise now, and a club called Zouk, primarily EDM, had thirty eight million ringgit, about eight million euros spent on it this year. Zouk is huge, and although it is mainstream they had John Digweed play the other day.

Have you always been into music?
Yes, but not always Techno. I used to like Hip Hop as a teeneager then Drum and Bass. It was my early to mid twenties when I got into more dance music and clubbing.

Tell us about this new app ‘Bookya’…

Bookya is going to help create more gigs worldwide, it’s almost like a ‘Linkedin’ but just for music professionals. Features such as booking services and a recommendation tool will be available in future versions of the app.

Essentially, Bookya is like a location engine, so you can find out as an artist where you are most popular and then be matched with promoters or bookers in that location.

As a touring artist you can fill in the empty days of your tour with midweek gigs in nearby locations. The Bookya app informs everyone in that region that you will be there in advance, then connects you to the relevant professionals there.

How did you get involved?
I met my boss out clubbing and he offered me a job a few weeks later, he looked at the PR and marketing that I had done for my own business, my beauty salon, but I think he chose me on personality rather than a degree or something like that.

My role as PR director involves taking care of the image of the company, promoting the app to music professionals, creating content for our media channels and hosting our events, it’s super fun.

I interview DJs, sometimes just for feedback on the app, you can read the Bookya Sessions on our Medium page.

Most recently I was meeting with Dj Kuma who is from KL, he plays here in Koh Phangan and he loves the Bookya idea, he thinks it will be really beneficial for everybody and hopes it will get him more gigs too.

You are hoping to do some kind of launch here on Phangan, what will this be?

We will have a launch for music professionals on Koh Phangan sometime next year. Our location launch parties are pretty nice, we entertain and spoil our guests as we tell them about Bookya. The app is free and quick to download, and we give away useful merchandise like USBs during our events.

What’s the party and music scene like on Kuala Lumpur?
It’s getting better and it has changed a lot over the last five years, with more variety of djs and more International dj bookings.

It is some of the local djs that I really look forward to though, I really like Alam Shah who warmed up for Jamie Jones, everyone said he smashed it! He’s part of a collective called ‘Ohrwurm’ they brought Blond:ish and Kate Simko amongst other International names this year.

What do you like about coming to Koh Phangan?

It’s very relaxed, I feel like I don’t even need to wear shoes. It’s been a few years since I have been here, things have changed but not the relaxed vibe of the place. I’m excited about Infinity Beach Club on Monday (Go Deep event), it looks like an amazing venue. It is easy for us to get here from KL as we can fly to Surat Thani or Koh Samui.

I really like Thai massage too, I own a beauty salon so I’m fussy, I’ve been a masseuse for twelve years, but I really like the massages here, even the basic one on the beach is nice.

I enjoy riding motorbikes along the coastal roads and taking in the scenery, especially in the morning when the weather is fresh. I like being high in the mountains and looking down across the beautiful ocean views.

What is your life philosophy?
It’s all about balance.
